Best time to see the Northern Lights in Ivalo

From early autumn through late winter and into spring, Ivalo has nights dark enough to see the northern lights. You need a clear view of the sky and aurora activity driven by the Sun. If you can, leave several evenings free so you have time for the weather to change.

Autumn or winter?

Autumn

Dark nights return while the ground may still be snow-free. Choose autumn for fall colours and evenings outdoors before the snowy season.

Winter

Long nights give you more time in darkness. Choose winter if you also want snowy scenery and winter activities during the day.

Ivalo’s three-night outlook

The panel combines an estimate of aurora activity with local cloud and darkness information. It helps you decide when to look. Clouds can hide the aurora even when activity is high. If the panel has no data, check Ivalo’s hourly cloud forecast and look for breaks after dark.

Can I see the Northern Lights tonight?

Once it’s dark, check for clear patches of sky. Use the outlook to see how favourable conditions look for the night. Clouds can move and the aurora can come and go, so give yourself time outside and check again later if the sky clears.

Where to watch

Look for an open view of the sky away from bright lights. Dress warmly enough to spend time outside and give your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the dark.
